Capital of the famous Algarve region and the municipality of the same name, Faro is located in the south of Portugal, 280km from the capital Lisbon. The city is rich in natural beauties and is bathed by the Ria Formosa, a region considered a national Natural Reserve since 1978.
The city was very important during the Roman Empire and even today it preserves Arab and Roman ruins. The historic center of the city is composed of three nuclei: Vila Adentro, Mouraria and Bairro Ribeirinho. It covers the evolution of the city from the Christian reconquest to the consolidated urban structure in the 16th and 19th centuries.
Faro is a city that attracts thousands of tourists every year, especially in the summer, for the landscapes and events that take place around the city, such as the Faro Motorcycle Concentration, the International Short Film Festival, the Feira of Santa Iria, the Festival F among others.
In addition to its rail and road network that connects several cities within the country, Faro is the seat of the International Airport Gago Coutinho, an entrance and exit door of the Algarve.
In addition to its history and nature, the city is also known for the University of the Algarve, which stands out for being an important education reference in the region and was recognized as one of the best in the world by the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020, highlighting as the best Portuguese university in the field of Hospitality & Tourism Management.
