“The Place of Art in Creative Cities – Between Myth and Reality”

Mirian Nogueira Tavares holds a PhD in Contemporary Communication and Culture from the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil). Currently, she is the coordinator of the Research Center for Arts and Communication (CIAC) and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of the Algarve (UAlg). Moreover, she is the Director of thePhD. program in Digital Media Art, taught in a partnership between the University of the Algarve and the Open University of Lisbon. At an international level, she is the vice president of the International Association for Computational Art – ARTECH-Int, which she coordinates with other important roles at a national level. Mirian Tavares is a member of the curatorial team of the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network and Director of Rotura – Journal of Communication, Culture, and Arts. She has been involved in more than 25 scientific projects, of which she has often played a general coordinating and/or institutional coordinating role. Mirian has participated, by invitation, in more than 100 national and international conferences, and has published more than 60 articles in nationally and internationally recognized reference journals. As a result of her intensive scientific activity, Mirian has published 17 books and 56 chapters in highly recognized publications in her field of study. In total, more than 50 masters, doctorate, and post-doc students have defended their theses under her guidance. Mirian Tavares participates regularly in the production of various cultural magazines, as well as texts and artistic catalogues. She has coordinated and conceptually developed an original web series designed to disseminate science (CIAC Talks and CIAC Talks Initiative). Her most recent fields of research are: Communication, Digital Media-Art, Cinema, Visual Arts, and Culture and the Arts.
